Glamourized body image
Many TV shows and magazine articles talk about celebrities who are fat or thin without thinking about the implications these may bring to a young person's way of thinking regarding normal and healthy body. We often wonder why eating disorders are becoming rampant but we forget that most of the time we see these celebrities on TV looking physically perfect as if they were born with it. As people become obssessed with how they should look, they try to use drastic measures. In some instances, people who do not have the inner strength to undergo physical changes tend to project their frustrations to the people around them. I saw a show on TV (Dr. Phil) that talked about this kind of problem. In the show, the girl narrates that her father seem to be repulsed by her because she is a little bit overweight. After watching the show, I pondered about the reasons why some people react this way. Yes, the father gave his reasons why he was acting like a jerk toward his daughter but come to think of it, his attitude might be a result of the glamourized body images he sees and reads about.

I absolutely think that having a thin body is great, however why is it so important? Being thin is not equal to being healthy. I was watching Ellen DeGeneres a few months ago, and the health specialist was stating that just because people weigh more than others does not mean that they are unhealthy. I believe people misconcept weight with beauty, but a lot of celebrities are taking action towards this matter. For example, Tyra Banks has ran numerous segments on her talk show regarding the media, and the fashion industry targeting young women to have the ideal underweight body. I think if celebrities like Tyra Banks step up and speak their mind then it may have some influence over the general public.
That father seems like a jerk, you should love your kids no matter what they look like. If your child is unhealthy, you should encourage them with healthy foods, and daily exercises. It's not fair to just blame it completely on the child. Even if the father thinks negatively about his child, he should always remember that the child gets some of the genes from the father.
Did the father actually say he was repulsed by her? That is a little harsh...but like trufant23 said, you should encourage your children to be healthy. He is probably the biggest part of the problem.
